Muckrakers - Upton Sinclair Wrote The Jungle. - Jacob Riis Wrote books about tenament life. - Lincoln Steffens Wrote Muckraking articles that were ran in a series in MClures Magazine. He also the Shame of the Cities. - Ida Tarbell Wrote the History of the Standard Oil Company. - Henry Demarest Lloyd One of the earliest muckrackers, wrote a series of articles for the Atlantic Monthly attacking the practices of the Standard Oli Company and railroads. - Theodore Dreiser Author of The Titan and The Financer. Portayed the avarice and ruthlessnesss of an industrialist.
Political Reforms - Australian Secret Ballot Issuing ballots printed by the state, and requiring voters to mark their choices secretly in a curtained booth. - Direct Primary Placing nominating process directly in the hands of the voters. - Initiative A method by which voters could compell the legislature to consider a bill . - Referendum Allowed citizens to vote for proposed laws printed on their ballots. - Recall Enabled voters to remove a corrupt or unsatisfactory politician from office by majority vote before that official term had expired. - 17th Amendment Established the direct election of U.S senators by popular vote.

Anthony Suffragist from previous generations. - Alice Paul Broke from NAWSA to form National Women's Party. - Carrie Chapman Catt President of the National American Woman Suffrage Association, argued that the vote would broaden democracy and empower women. Thus enabling them to more actively care for their families. - NAWSA National American Women Sufferage Association. - 19th Amendment Women recieve the right to vote in all election at the local state and national levels.
African Americans - Booker T. Washington Was the most influential African American at the turn of the century. Head of the Tuskegee Institute of Alabama. - W.E.B. DuBois A northerner who argued that political and social rights were prerequisite for economic independence. - NAACP Mission was to abolish all forms of segregation. National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. - Atlanta Exposition Speech made by Washington, argued that blacks needs for education and economic progress were of foremost importance, so they could better themselves economically.
